Need Food

Okay, Peoria, I've run through my last giant sack of rice and I'm getting sick of buying rice in 2-lb. increments, so I need a new ethnic foods mart, ideally one that carries the brown basmati rice in burlap sacks. Where do you shop?

The ideal place on University closed, but doesn't the Asian grocer on main carry many of the same products? They stock a number of ethnic foods other than asian, including Indian, Mexican, Middle Eastern etc. I can't remember whether I have purchased basmati there though. They have an aisle in back dedicated to giant sacks of grain. I was just there yesterday.

There's also a place in Bloomington near the Krispy Kreme, I think it's called World Gourmet Foods or something.

Lin Hing on Main St. across from Campus Town near Soo Kim. They have a wide variety of ethnic foods and basmati rice.

Went and checked out Lin Hing as per angela and jessamyn's suggestion. Pretty pleased. They didn't have the exact kind of rice I wanted, but they do have 25- and 50-lb. sacks of brown rice, which makes me happy. And lots and lots of other good stuff!

I got a big ol' sack of Jasmine rice, which I've been wanting to try but is hard to find at a reasonable price in regular supermarkets. I'll definitely be back!

Lin Hing is expensive for Indian (the prices are are double what you'll find in Chicago). Devon on Pioneer Parkway and Knoxville (next to 2 Chez) is much more reasonable. Not sure if they have brown basmati though. I imagine you can buy brown basmati at Naturally Yours at the Metro Center.

I've noticed that "Devon" grocery store on Pioneer Parkway and wondered about it....

There is also a Mexican food store off of, I think it's Wisconsin? (The road the runs alongside the Fam Vid on War) Super cheap for garlic, peppers, etc... but not sure about their stock of rice.

What time do you go to the Devon place? The two times I tried to go there they were closed. There was a sign that listed the hours and I was there at a supposedly open time, very irratating.

I know it is off the subject of brown basmati, but I've noticed the Devon place is always open in the evening.

Haven't been to the Mexican store on Wisconsin in years since it turned into more of a clothes and accessory store. Is it more food now? I go to the Mexican store on Perry.

The larger, newer Mexican food shop on Wisconsin is across the street from the old Little Chef (closed) diner. Kansas & Wisconsin

No Trader Joes in Peoria yet? Its not totally ethnic(y) but it does the job when you are craving some Pad Thai and don't feel like restaurant-ing it.

La Esquinita on Wisconsin has a much better selection than the mexican grocer on Perry, plus a full service meat counter (speak spanish or bring a translator). Next door owned by the same family is Peoria's only authentic Mexican restaurant, Mi Familia, where the tortas are fabulous, and the chilaquiles are incredibly spicy. Order a horchata to tame the heat. Sorry eyebrows, they carry mexican groceries only.
